HPL Express Concept
The HPL Express concept transforms the traditional library into a multi-purpose facility providing service to its neighborhood community with books, computers, multimedia resources, Internet access, information literacy training materials, and interactive distance learning classes.
Designed to be located in only 2,000, 5,000 or 7,500 square feet of space, an HPL Express will consist of three major areas: a Reading Center, a Computer Center with distinct facilities for Children, Teens and Adults, and a Learning Center/Classroom.
The Reading Center will have a collection consisting of popular books, audio materials, dvds, magazines, newspapers, and a children's collection.
In the Computer Center, the traditional reference collection will be replaced with a robust selection of commercial electronic databases that are rarely within the means of the average citizen. These computers will be used to provide reference information, electronic recreation, and to train customers on how to use computers, develop Web pages, and access information electronically.
The Learning Center/Classroom will be used for Houston Public Library provided computer training as well as classes and programs sponsored by other groups and organizations.
The public area may also include an Internet Café, Copy Center, Study Rooms, and Restrooms. Located within the staff area will be the Manager's Office, Staff Workroom, Breakroom, Staff Restroom, Janitor's Closet, and Information Technology Workroom.
This award-winning HPL Express concept was developed by mArchitects, and puts service emphasis on electronic usage and popular materials.
