CAPITAL PROJECTS

HPL Express Frank

HPL Express Frank will replace the current Frank Library by moving to a 9,000 square foot facility located at 10103 Fondren on the first floor of the Brays Oaks Towers. The Notice to Proceed for construction was issued on May 1, 2008 and construction has begun. Completion is expected in Fall of 2008.

Oak Forest Neighborhood Library

Oak ForestPreliminary design is underway for the Oak Forest Library - providing for the addition of 4,000 square feet and renovation of the existing facility. Final designs are expected in Summer 2008 with construction expected to begin by the end of the year.

Kendall Neighborhood Library

Kendall Library will relocate to 609 North Eldridge Parkway. Current plans have this new 3-story, 30,000 square foot facility shared by the Houston Public Library (26,000 square feet) and the Parks and Recreation Department (4,000 square feet). Design is underway for this facility.

ADA Renovations

Four libraries (Dixon, Jungman, Melcher and Ring) have been targeted for renovations in order to comply with the Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS) and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Each library will be completed individually to expedite the entire project and minimize library closures. This project is currently in design.

Bracewell Neighborhood Library

Bracewell Library will relocate to 9002 Kingspoint Drive with a new 12,000 square foot facility. This project is currently in its preliminary design. Final designs should be complete by Summer 2008 with construction projected to begin by the end of the year.

Vinson Neighborhood Library + HPL Express

Vinson RenderingThe new Vinson Library and adjoining HPL Express are part of the South Post Oak Multi-Service Center, located just a few blocks from the current Vinson Library. The new library space will be approximately 20,000 square feet. The Groundbreaking Event took place on October 12, 2007. Construction is underway and completion is expected in early 2009.

The African American Library at the Gregory School

Gregory SchoolThis project will convert the historic Gregory M. Lincoln site in the Fourth Ward area to an African-American archival library. A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held on April 28, 2008 and construction is currently underway. Completion is expected in late 2009.

Julia Ideson Building

Design is underway for the restoration of the Julia Ideson Building as well as an addition to the building. This includes upgrading the facility for current and future archival functions. Mayor Bill White appointed a group, named the Julia Ideson Library Preservation Partners, to raise money needed for this project. Clayton Genealogical Center - House and Grounds

Clayton RenderingThe renovation of the Clayton Complex will upgrade the buildings for public use. Construction began in Summer of 2007 and is expected to be complete by the end of 2008. The Main House will contain book stacks and reading rooms. The Guest House will be remodeled for office space and a training room. The renovated Carriage House will serve as a meeting room for the entire Complex.
