Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are always needed to support Clayton Library activities and services. All Houston Public Library volunteers begin by taking a mandatory training course on volunteering at HPL, in addition Clayton Library volunteers are trained in the specific duties they will perform. Volunteers are currently needed in the following areas:

• Shelving: Clayton is an "open stack" library, and patrons are free to browse the shelves and select the books they need. When the books are returned to the book carts at the ends of the stacks, library staff members and volunteers return them to their proper place on the shelves. Even if you can only spend a few hours once a week or once a month, the library could use your help in this area. To become a shelving volunteer, you must apply (forms available at the main desk) and attend a shelving class taught by a member of the library staff.

Volunteers are also used for special or on-going projects organized by the library or by the Clayton Library Friends (CLF). Past and ongoing projects include the following:

• Microcard inventory
• Stops and targets for microfilm
• 1910 Census verification project
• Dividing and relabeling the book collection into county sections
• Original move of the collection into the Clayton Main building

For 2007 volunteers will be sought for a variety of special projects organized by the library. Please continue to check this webpage for updates.
