COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS OFFERED AT PLEASANTVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD LIBRARY

City leaders join community leaders in new employment skills-building program

HOUSTON (October 30, 2006) - Pleasantville Neighborhood Library, located at 1520 Gellhorn Drive, will hold Community Employment Workshops on the first Friday of each month from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Friday, November 3. The new program is a joint effort between Pleasantville community leaders, City Council Member Jarvis Johnson's office, and the Houston Public Library.

The employment workshops are free and open to the public. Skill training techniques include resume writing, completing online employment applications, and navigation of The Work in Texas employment database web site.

"This is the first of an on-going partnership that will expand to other neighborhood libraries," said Debbie Allen, community liaison and president of the Pleasantville Environmental Coalition. "The workshops complement the programs currently offered to educate the community, providing a valuable resource to improve the marketability for job seekers in surrounding industries," she said. Houston communities benefiting from this new service include the Clinton Park Tri-Community, Groveland Park Terrace, Pleasantville, and Port of Houston.

For more information on the workshops offered, please visit www.houstonlibrary.org or call 832.393.2330.

Built in 1974, Pleasantville Neighborhood Library is a strong resource center for the Pleasantville community. Of the many services offered to its customers, the Pleasantville Library's basic computer training classes on its nine dedicated computer stations and 10 wireless internet laptops are filled to capacity. The addition of Community Employment Workshops provides additional service needs to local job seekers.
