As lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer social movements mature, archives are increasingly important resources, both for community members and researchers. For most queer communities, however, the work of providing and maintaining that vital resource occurs largely on a volunteer basis. While Houston is no exception to this trend, a number of local individuals and organizations have maintained significant collections. In celebration of International Literacy Day, join us for readings and refreshments to introduce the 2008 Books on the Bayou, "Ellen Foster" by Kaye Gibbons. Set in the rural South in the 1970s, "Ellen Foster" tells the story of 11-year-old Ellen's fight for survival and search for a home. Since 2002 Houston Public Library has hosted an annual community-wide project to foster a culture of reading by encouraging people to come together to discuss a selected book. Houston Public Library and our program partners will host book and film discussions, displays, storytelling and special programs on financial management from September 8 through October 28. A native of North Carolina, Kaye Gibbons wrote "Ellen Foster," her first novel, at age 26, drawing from some of her personal experiences growing up.
