LGBT@HPL
8/7/2008 7:00 PM
Join us for the third monthly installment of our new LGBT@HPL Series. As lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer social movements mature, archives are increasingly important resources, both for community members and researchers. For most queer communities, however, the work of providing and maintaining that vital resource occurs largely on a volunteer basis. While Houston is no exception to this trend, a number of local individuals and organizations have maintained significant collections. This presentation provides an opportunity for Houston’s LGBTQ communities to celebrate those resources, discover some of the connections between them, and address some of the challenges they face in the future.

Exhibit, Jesse Holman Jones
7/10/2008 - 7/31/2008
Dedicated on January 18, 1976, the Central Library of the Houston Public Library system was renamed the Jesse H. Jones Building in 1989 to pay tribute to the generosity of Houston Endowment and its founder. As the renovated Jones building reopened on May 31, 2008, HMRC honors "Mr. Houston", the man who built 35 of the city's first skyscrapers and helped to make the city a seaport and the biggest city in the South.
Harris County Court Documents
8/4/2008 - 9/3/2008
Documents from the 1840s, on loan from the Harris County District Clerk’s office, are on display on the second floor of the Julia Ideson Building. They include a former slave's fight to regain her freedom in 1847 and a property dispute between Republic of Texas Presidents Sam Houston and Mirabeau B. Lamar. Exhibit runs August 4 to September 3.
Houston's Green Spaces and Waterways
8/11/2008 - 10/11/2008
In celebration of the city of Houston's birthday on August 30, 1836, an exhibit of photographs and landscape architectural drawings from HMRC’s archival collections highlights the ways in which, over the past 100 plus years, Houstonians have worked and played in our many parks and on the bayous that run through them. These scenes of boating and boat-building, dock workers, family outings and employee picnics, among others, were captured by both commercial and amateur photographers during the last century. Exhibit runs August 11 to October 11.
